The America's Cup
| |
Dating back to 1851, when a boat named "America" won the 100 Guineas Cup
and then presented the trophy up for challenge, the America's Cup is the
pinnacle of Yacht Racing.
Every Cup, Challenger Yachts compete for approximately 2 years in the
Louis Vuitton Acts, culminating in the Louis Vuitton Cup, when the winning
Challenger earns the right to race the holder for the America's Cup.
For the first time since the original race, the America's Cup was held in Europe -
here in Valencia, in 2007,
where the top yachts from around the world challenged
the current holders,Societe Nautique de Geneve (SNG) to the cup known as the oldest trophy in sport. After their successful defence, Alinghi announced their intention to keep the tournament here for the 33rd Americas Cup.

Louis Vuitton Act 13 3rd-7th April
Louis Vuitton Cup 16th April - 7th May
All 11 Challengers fight for the final 4 places which make up the semi-finals.
All races are now match races, with each team racing each other once, round robin style.
Louis Vuitton Cup Semi-Finals 14th - 25th May
The top
Challenger chooses which of the other 3 semi-finalists to race against in a best of 9 races competition
(first to 5 race wins makes the LV Final) with 1 race per day.
The remaining 2 teams are paired to compete in the other semi-final, with the 2 winners heading to the Louis Vuitton Cup Final.
Louis Vuitton Cup Final 1st - 12th June
A best of 9 races competition, as per the semi, the winner receives the Louis Vuitton Cup along with
the right to challenge Team Alinghi for the America's Cup.
Fact:
The winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup has gone on to defeat the Defender of the America's Cup
on 4 of the 6 occasions the cup has been awarded. Prior to 1983 (when the Louis Vuitton Cup was introduced)
no Challenger had EVER beaten the Defender, in 132 years.
The Americas Cup Match 23rd June - 7th July
A best of 9 races competition (first to 5 race wins) where 4 years of hard work,
by both the Defender and the Challenger, comes to fruition. It all comes down to this,
and consistency is the key to success as the teams battle over a range of conditions.
Will it be an easy whitewash victory, or a fight to the 9th, and final, race?
